Jain Paryushan Celebration
Every year, during the
Shravana-Bhadrapada season, Jain International Residential School (JIRS)
celebrates the Jain Paryushan festival for a period of eight days with devotion
and dedication. This year too was no different and JIRS celebrated the prestigious
festival from 18 to 25 August 2017.
The festival started with a ‘Deeksha & rsrsquo; – taking oath
to practice the religious systems and traditions of Jainism. All Jain students
participated with full vigor and zeal in the various religious rituals. They
listened with rapt attention to the holy sermons of the saints. ‘Prathikraman’
a systematic ritual of repentance and begging forgiveness was conducted every
day from 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm.
Special food arrangements were made for students who were
practicing Ekasana and Byasana (having food only once or twice a day, or
fasting for the whole day). Students visited the Jain temple in the campus to
invoke the blessings of saints. The temple head explained the importance and
significance of the temple and Paryushan Parv to the students.
On the final day of the festival, students said ‘Michhami Dugudam’
to each other, a term that seeks forgiveness. It means, "If I have caused
you offence in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, in thought, word or deed,
then I seek your forgiveness". In addition to requesting forgiveness, one
has to grant forgiveness as well. The JIRS students ended this year’s Jain
Paryushan festival with this noble act.
